“We see a world where the wine industry is built around a new set of behaviours, one which values more freedom and less intervention. More curiosity and less control. More experimentation and less rules. A more natural approach to wine, how it is grown, and how it is experienced.”

NATURAL WINE SOCIETY

MANIFESTO DIRECTIVE

This is what we have set out to do..

The international wine industry is governed by the existing behaviours of compliance and an industrial consumption framework. The Natural Wine Society is a movement who aims to shine a light on how most of the common cultural interventions during winemaking are completely superfluous and rob the wine a part of its soul.

Our mission is to elevate and champion the unconventional, natural approach to wine. We achieve this by building advocacy and acceptance among thought leaders, decision makers and producers on the topic of natural wine. Raising awareness of natural wine, its story and those who grow and produce it with consumers and influencers. Legitimising and recognising natural wine’s own aesthetic and rightful place in the world as an authentic choice - and we back up this pursuit with consideration, conversation and consensus amongst all stakeholders.

Wine Becoming

Add nothing to the wine and take nothing away from it.

The term “wine becoming” is more appropriate for natural wine, in contrast to “wine making” which is characterised by intervention and control.

Imposing our own cultural interventions during winemaking denies wine’s authenticity - It separates the soul from the soil, mutes the wine’s honest & unabashed expression, and disconnects provenance from time and place.

Process should therefore be guided by philosophy and principles in the presence of nature. And not the other way around.

Our Approach

is one of building a sustainable natural wine movement - governed by the following principles:

  • We create change through conversation and consensus - building acceptance and accountability within the natural wine movement.

  • We activate and organize the diverse groups of people, institutions, and coalitions around a shared vision of natural wine.

  • We strengthen connections across issues so that stakeholders can work together to coordinate and align activity and advocacy.

  • We provide resources to change makers, build a strong pipeline of leaders, and amplify the voices and vision of natural wine ambassadors and their messages.

  • We combine research, advocacy, media and campaigns, legal action, community engagement, and direct action to gain support and bring about change.

“Every great movement in the world starts with a tiny group of people who simply refuse to accept a situation.”
